The Joy of Teaching Runs in this Family!

Laura Colebrook, Bosa Donuts Teacher of the Month

Laura Colebrook teaches kindergarten at Oasis Elementary. She worked at a summer camp before she started college and found that she had a knack for working with kids. “I enjoyed teaching them, helping and mentoring them,” says Colebrook.

Colebrook worked with third graders early in her career. She stepped away from the classroom when she had kids, and then returned to teach kindergarten. “The best thing is they are so sweet and they try so hard,” she says of her young pupils. “The hardest thing is they are not very capable of doing things by themselves.”

When she was in school, Colebrook liked math and she has fun during this time of year doing math activities using candy corn, she says. It’s all part of the Halloween fun, just like dressing in costume for the day and joining the school parade.

“I do like teaching math, but it’s really fun teaching kids to read—to see them taking off and having that new adventure,” explains Colebrook. This month, her students will enjoy Thanksgiving stories and look at ways those stories can relate to their own lives, Colebrook shares.

Teaching is all in the family for Colebrook. Her husband teaches high school, her two sisters are both teachers and her grandma was also a teacher. She says they do talk shop and share ideas, but it is different realm for her husband, who is working with older kids.

When she is not in the classroom, Colebrook enjoys playing games with her family, hiking and spending time outdoors. She likes to go camping near the Mogollon Rim with her husband and three kids. Colebrook also plays piano and makes music for fun and at her church.

Colebrook likes to tell her students to give things a try, even when they are not sure of the outcome. “If you try, you learn something. If you don’t try, you’re not learning anything,” she points out.

According to student Blakelyn, Colebrook “helps everyone to do their best.”
