Celebrating 25 Years of Community-Supported Conservation
Pima County is a special place. As one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, the Sonoran Desert is home to incredible beauty, deep human history, iconic plants, animals, grasslands, mountains, and riparian areas.
More than 25 years ago, following years of polarized disagreement, intensive work, collaboration, negotiation, compromise, and relationship building, our community came together to find common ground. Together, we ensured that the balance of conserving and protecting natural and cultural landscapes with economically prosperous and responsible development would be enshrined in a guiding framework for the benefit of future generations.
The Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan (SDCP) considers the following elements:
Critical habitats and biological corridors, riparian areas, mountain parks, historical and cultural preservation, and ranch conservation—combined with robust community education and engagement efforts to ensure continued commitment to a land management plan for Pima County that is celebrated and emulated internationally.
