Desert Flowers
If you are someone that likes to plant flowers, then read this article. The Sonoran Desert has five seasons. They are spring, dry summer, wet summer, fall and winter. We plant all year long in our desert. It just has to be the right plant.
Some people wonder what is the best month to plant flowers. The best time to plant flowers is in late fall (October/ November) taking advantage of the mild winter and establishing the plant before the heat. These are cool season flowers: tulips, daffodils and snapdragons, which
will blossom during the spring months. We plant them so the roots can grow deep before it freezes. Rain water is very important for the flowers to germinate (to begin to grow and put out shoots). In Autumn, there is something called a triggering rain which helps flowers grow. You don’t want to over water flowers or they will die. Sunlight is also necessary for growth.
Planting warm season flowers is best done in March or April. There are pretty flowers that grow in extreme heat like marigolds, sunflowers and cosmos. You can also plant native flowers like California Poppy. These plants need at least eight hours of direct sunlight per day. You can’t water them too much or they will die because the roots are too wet. You could use mulch around the flower to soak up the water and keep the weeds out. Fertilizing regularly is helpful. If you never planted Sonoran Desert flowers I hope you learned some helpful tips.
