Mario‘s Universe Expands in Star-Studded Sequel

Have you seen the 2023 hit “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”? Nintendo and Illumination return for their 40th anniversary celebration with a direct sequel, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” Featuring Mario, Luigi and Peach, this new installment blasted into Harkins and other theaters on April 1 with bigger ambitions and a much wider scope!

The returning voice cast—including Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Anya Taylor-Joy, helps anchor the film while hinting at something even larger on the horizon: a potential Nintendo cinematic universe. This time, the story shifts beyond the familiar Mushroom Kingdom and into the cosmos, drawing clear inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy and elements of Super Mario Odyssey. When a mysterious call for help tied to Peach’s past emerges, Mario and his friends launch into space on a high-stakes galactic adventure.

The plot centers on stopping Bowser Jr., who is determined to restore his father’s honor. It also introduces the enigmatic Rosalina into the conflict. One of the film’s strongest elements is the evolution of Mario and Peach’s relationship, which feels more layered and emotionally grounded than before. Another standout moment comes with the surprise appearance of Fox McCloud (voiced by Glen Powell)—a cameo that boldly teases a larger crossover and had audiences buzzing.

Behind the scenes, producers Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri once again team up with directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, alongside screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Their collaboration delivers a film that feels both celebratory and forward-looking, honoring Mario’s legacy while setting the stage for future stories.

A still-shrunken Bowser, imprisoned after the events of the first film, adds a humorous subplot as Mario and Luigi attempt to reform him. Altogether, the movie balances action, humor, and surprising elements.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” released on April 1 and stands as a vibrant centerpiece for the franchise’s 40th anniversary. With its cosmic scale, character development, and tantalizing hints of what’s to come, it’s a must-watch for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
