Blume Book Looks at Growing Up

“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” by Judy Blume is a really good and interesting book. It’s about a girl named Margaret who moves from New York City to New Jersey.

She thinks it’s kind of weird at first because she’s used to living in a big city. When she gets there, she meets a girl named Nancy and starts hanging out with her and her friends. They have a group with rules, and Margaret tries to follow them so everyone will like her, but sometimes the girls are mean and gossip about others.

I liked how the story showed what it feels like to try to fit in and make new friends. This book also teaches you about growing up and changes in your body, which she felt were confusing but are totally normal.

Margaret talks to God about her feelings, which I thought was really cool because it shows how she tries to figure things out. Both her parents believed in different religions, and both sides of her grandparents were hesitant about the marriage. In the story, Margaret meets her mom’s parents for the first time.

The book is funny in some parts, but it also has important lessons about being kind and being yourself instead of just following others. I think this is a great book for kids around 10–12 years old because it’s easy to understand and really relatable.
