Books Take Readers Back in Time

Sugar Creek Gang is a series of 36 books written by Paul Hutchens, and I have read five of them. The first book, “The Swamp Robber,” was published in 1941, and the 36th book, “The Case of the Missing Calf,” was published in 1964.

The Sugar Creek Gang is a group of Christian boys who live in Sugar Creek, Indiana. They have many adventures together. They encounter wild animals, they solve a mystery, and they rescue people in danger.

When they get together around the creek, they play, plan, and make decisions about meetings and strategies. Church is important to most of them, so they talk about the Bible and Christian faith. However, they all are very respectful of each other’s beliefs.

It is exciting to read these stories set in the mid-20th century. It is fun to see how our country was back then. There were more places with nature, the kids played outside in places we now would consider wild. They behaved and talked differently than we do now. If you have the opportunity, read a books from this series!
